Introduction to Linux (tldp) describes what Linux is. So does What is Linux.
I use Linux (or GNU/Linux) a lot, at work, at home, and with some of my hobbies. Linux is Free Software (or Open Source) Unix-like Operating System based upon the GNU tools from the Free Software Foundation and the Linux kernel written by Linus Toldvalds.
I have been using Linux since 1993, kernel 0.99p?? circa 1993 on a i486 33 MHz with 8MB of RAM, and my first Linux system of my very own was in 1995, Slackware 3.0 (kernel 1.2.13 & 1.3.18, ELF binary format, gcc 2.7.0, XFree86 3.1.2) on a Pentium 100 MHz with 16MB of RAM and 1 GB harddrive.
Here is a local mirror of a timeline of Linux last updated in 2002.
