My favourite books

A favourite book is a precious thing, but unlike material wealth such as gold or diamonds, you can share or promote books freely without taking away the value from your copy of the book. It is the words, the ideas which give a book its worth.

  1. Tao Te Ching - Lao Tzu
    Book of the Way
  2. Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury
Originally published in 1953, a classic novel about a totalitarian regime where books are burnt.
  3. The Codebreakers The Comprehensive History of Secret Communication from Ancient Times to the Internet - David Kahn
The book on the history of cryptography.
  4. The C Programming Language, 2nd ed - Kernighan and Ritchie
The "C Bible", written by the creators of the language.
  5. The Mythical Man-Month: Essays on Software Engineering - Fred Brooks
An excellent introduction into software engineering, originally written in 1975, an updated copy was published in 1995.
  6. Sophie's World: A Novel About the History of Philosophy - Jostein Gaarder
A wonderfully colourful and gentle introduction to Philosophy.
  7. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change - Stephen R. Covey
  8. A Mathematician's Apology - G. H. Hardy
Introduction by C.P. Snow, which is a short biography of G. H. Hardy.
Hardy's "apology" is an enlightening explanation of the world of a mathematician.

There are many more great books I've read, but these ones have likely had the greatest impact on my life.
